Does this work for linux users, too? I just gave it a try with chromium and opera, and the performance seems to be the same as before. (something like 130 kn on my relatively old amd quadcore. OS is ubuntu 16.04, btw. )

It works on Linux. I'm running Chromium 53 on ArchLinux.

Maybe your chromium is outdated?

I switched to chrome from Firefox and feel the site also by other means navigate faster. Is the site more optimal for Chrome than Firefox.
