I visited someone else's profile and I did not had the option to add to friends.
I have been on lichess for a long time, never knew that existed on a profile.

[If nothing changed lately regarding this,] There's a configuration that allows players to prevent other people from following them (either keeping current followers or not), so that's most likely the case here ;)

you have to click on the thumbs up button to add friend
